A Veteran Game Director's Fresh Project That Appears Distinct But Builds On The Same Ideas.
The acclaimed co-director behind the iconic survival game has unveiled a comeback to video games. His new project, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the debut for his development house, Wildflower Interactive, and it will build on the legacy he helped create centered around reactive companion characters.
A Witch, A Creature, and A New Kind of Adventure
Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a narrative-driven exploration title. You guide an elderly witch, a protagonist who challenges typical power fantasies. This central concept originated in an interest in re-examining the typical hero’s journey.
"Consider a scenario where you didn’t have the sword or shield? What if your character was physically limited? What if you’re a little old lady?" mused the director. "This felt deeply interesting to explore the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about fighting your way through obstacles, but it’s also about dedication, resolve, and tenacity."
Evolving Past Companions: A New Level of AI Interaction
Even though the title looks different visually, its core innovation is a direct continuation the technology seen in The Last of Us. The entire project sprang from one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design a companion character truly living and learning based on player actions?"
The mysterious beast in the game transcends typical AI behavior. Straley describes it as a curious child which observes and responds through a multi-phase process. To begin with, it explores with wonder, resulting in silly antics. Then, it tries to copy what it sees. In the end, it observes and assimilates comprehending the world's rules.
- To illustrate: Should the beast observe Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it grasps the physical act without knowing the purpose.
- Subsequently, it may begin grabbing random objects and try slotting them, copying the action.
- Understanding comes solely through accidental success an obstacle, forming an organic connection.
Where Every Playthrough Differs
This intricate technology is designed to create a deeply personal experience. Straley stresses that Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a traditionally structured narrative.
"Whenever I attempted traditional three-act structure for this project, the dynamic felt wrong," Straley explained. "The liveliness between these characters is that each individual player are going to have different sparks and narrative unlike anyone else's."
This commitment to player-defined experiences, the new title signifies both an evolution and a drastic departure from the creator's legendary previous titles. The project is presently being built for computer systems.
