The child of ex- South African Leader Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban city.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she published on social media four years ago during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her father.

A week of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including theft and fire-setting, left at least three hundred deceased and caused damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this unrest and confronts allegations of incitement to commit terrorism and public violence.

Background of the Proceedings

The demonstrations were centered in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's detention for disobeying a judicial ruling to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was in power.

The defendant has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously describing the government's legal argument as weak.

She has also repeatedly said the accusations against her were an bid to address political disputes with her father after he founded his own party and campaigned against the ANC.

Backing and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and familial persecution" against the ex-leader and his family.

A small number of supporters from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has argued that the testimony presented by the state is insufficient and does not have compelling grounds for a criminal finding.

Key Points of the Trial

  • Online comments from four years ago form the foundation of the prosecution's argument
  • Fatal protests in 2021 resulted in major casualties and monetary damage
  • The defendant is charged with multiple charges of incitement to violence
  • Judicial trials are projected to continue for multiple days

The court case continues as all parties present their cases before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a carefully observed legal battle with significant political implications for South Africa.
