Social Media Influencers Fueling Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Social Networks

Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted drug, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Platform Reaction and Material Removal

According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic material and banned related hashtags and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Marketplace Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with thousands of users, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and detailed guides for preparing or administering at home.

Within moments of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Costs

Within these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with postal service labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Platform Oversight and Safety Measures

A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“People are injecting substances they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current price rises for approved slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has previously seen individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may expose users to possibly significant medical dangers”.
