What Do We Know At This Time?

The Incident

Early Thursday morning at 9:31 AM, an eyewitness alerted the police, stating they had witnessed “a vehicle heading for members of the public, and an individual suffered a stabbing” in front of Heaton Park Shul, a Jewish house of worship in Crumpsall, Manchester, where people had gathered to celebrate Yom Kippur, the most sacred occasion in the Jewish faith.

Just six minutes later at 9:37 AM, a serious situation had been declared by police and designated a specific operational code, the code given for “terrorist assaults involving multiple locations”.

At 9.38am, the suspect, identified as the attacker, was neutralized by firearms officers. Ambulance crews got to the site at 9:41 AM, where several individuals were given care for injuries suffered from puncture wounds and the suspect’s vehicle. A hazardous devices unit arrived later.

Later that morning, it was reported that two of the injured people had succumbed to their injuries, as had the assailant, who was neutralized by gunfire.

At 3pm, the senior anti-terror official confirmed the attack a terrorist incident and announced that two arrests had been executed in connection with the case.

Where Did It Happen?

The incident occurred outside the gates of Heaton Park Shul, a traditional Jewish synagogue built in the late 1960s on a local roadway in a northern suburb. Crumpsall, like neighbouring Prestwich, has a substantial Jewish communities in northern England. The temple was expected to be crowded due to it falling on this sacred occasion. Like many synagogues in Britain, it had protective measures provided by skilled community members.

Identity of the Perpetrator?

An image of the individual, snapped moments earlier, has appeared in news outlets. However, up to now, few additional facts of him have been released. During his statement, the lead investigator stated that investigators are confident they had identified the perpetrator but due to “security concerns on site” they were unable to confirm for the time being.

The Significance of Yom Kippur?

This holy day is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Literally, it signifies “day of atonement” and often entails members of the Jewish people abstaining from food to “reflect deeply” and deepen their faith. Being the most important occasion, it is observed by the majority of Jews, including those who do not actively or regularly practice the religion.

Public and Official Responses?

The head of government commented he was “appalled by the attack” and the fact that it occurred during Yom Kippur “intensifies the outrage”. He returned to the UK from a European visit, where he was due to speak with European leaders.

The opposition leader called it “abhorrent and reprehensible” and denounced “the rise in antisemitism that has been observed nationally”.

A local official said he would “be alongside the local Jewish population now and will work through the day to support them”. The local MP informed a media outlet that “we must ensure these evil people will not disrupt our community”, and emphasized that “generally intergroup dynamics are excellent between diverse populations and faith-based organizations” in the area.
